Fresh Calls for Legal Betting in Vermont

There have been fresh calls for the legalization of sports betting, including mobile and online, in the state of Vermont.

The 2022 Sports Betting Committee has proposed the issuance of between two and six sports betting licenses in the state, and suggested a regulatory structure modelled on that of New Hampshire or New York – both high tax jurisdictions.

Furthermore, the committee said regulatory authority should be handed to the Vermont Department of Liquor and Lottery. It also suggested the setting of a minimum betting age, minimum revenue share, the definition of various wagering types, and the establishment of a fund to support financial literacy education.

It’s not the first time that interested parties have called for the legalization of sports betting in Vermont. A bill to legalize mobile sports betting failed to find enough support in January 2021, and a similar bill also stalled in February 2021.

Will the latest push result in the legalization of sports betting in Vermont? Maybe. After all, now its proponents can point to an accumulation of even more positive economic data from other states. And, if sports betting is legalized in Vermont, the chances are casino gaming won’t be far behind.
